Google Business Profile

The Builder's Google Business Profile Checklist

By Kelly Zauber · July 21, 2026

Here is a fact most builders do not know: nearly half of all Google searches have local intent, and more than half of searches end without a single click. That means when a homeowner searches for a custom builder in their area, what they see first is often your Google Business Profile, not your website. Your photos, your reviews, your hours, your phone number.

Your Google Business Profile is your storefront for half of all searches. It is also the data that Google and AI tools read when someone asks for a builder. A complete, active profile can lift your monthly views and calls significantly, and it costs nothing but attention. This checklist walks you through the 10 fixes that matter most.

1. Claim your profile and use your exact business name

Sign in at google.com/business and claim your listing. Use your real, legal business name, nothing more. Stuffing it with keywords like “Best Custom Homes Near Me” gets flagged and can cost you ranking. Verify by phone or postcard.

2. Pick the right primary category

Your primary category is one of the strongest ranking signals you have. Choose the one that best describes what you actually do, such as Home Builder or Custom Home Builder, then add two or three secondary categories. Do not leave this generic.

3. Fill out the whole description

Use all of the space. In a few plain sentences, say what you build, who you serve, and what makes you different. Include one natural phrase like “custom home builder” once. Google reads this to understand you, and fuller descriptions tend to perform better.

4. Upload 10 to 15 real photos

Profiles with strong photos get noticeably more clicks. Post real project photos: before-and-after shots, finished homes, your team, your work in progress. Skip stock images and blurry phone shots. Label each one clearly instead of leaving the default name.

5. Add your services, and be specific

Each service you list is a chance to match a search. List the specific things you do, like custom home building, home additions, and design-build, rather than one vague entry. Add a short line to each.

6. Post to your profile every week

Businesses that post regularly see higher engagement, and posts signal to Google that you are active. Share a recent project, a quick tip for homeowners, or something your team is working on. Two or three short posts a week is plenty.

7. Respond to every review

Reply to all of them, good and hard. Thank happy clients by name and mention a detail from their project. For a difficult review, stay calm, acknowledge the concern, and offer to make it right. Active review management builds trust with buyers and ranks better.

Add your website, and when you can, link to a specific relevant page rather than only the homepage. A working link tells Google you are a real, established business and helps both your profile and your site.

9. Define your service area

Set the specific cities and areas you serve rather than leaving it blank or saying an entire state. Buyers need to know you work where they are, and Google shows you more confidently when your area is clear.

10. Turn on booking and messaging

Most people who do a local search contact a business within a day. Make it one tap: turn on the call button and messaging, and add a booking link if you use one. The easier you are to reach, the more of those searches turn into calls.

What comes next

A complete profile is step one. The real leverage comes when your profile, your website, your reviews, and your content all work together, so both Google and the AI tools have an easy, confident answer when someone asks for a builder. That is what Builder Flow does.
